The Gundam Musou demo came out for PSN last week, so I decided to give it a go. Yes, I did call it Gundam Musou. Dynasty Warriors: Gundam is too stupid of a name for me to mutter. Both titles are accurate, though, for telling you what the gameplay is like. Gundam Musou, quite literally, is Dynasty Warriors with the warriors replaced with mobile suits from various Gundam universes. Dynasty Warriors players will feel quite at home playing this.

The demo includes one level. You play as Heero Yui from Gundam Wing, piloting the Wing Zero. Let me put this out before saying anything, I HATE Gundam Wing, with a passion. It’s ridiculousness is only rivaled by G Gundam and Gundam SEED among the Gundam series.

As far as I can (and care to) remember, there’s a planet/asteroid approaching earth that has some aliens (with mobile suits) on it. And apparently, for some reason, all of the heroes from various Gundam series were able to come together. I really don’t think it was explained further than that, but who cares? Look at Super Robot Taisen.

The level in the demo reminded me of the Yellow Turban level in Dynasty Warriors II. The terrain seems very similar, besides the fact that there is lava. Gameplay is standard Dynasty Warriors fare. Most of your time is spent pushing the square button to attack the masses of enemies (mostly GM’s and Zaku’s). As you defeat more and more enemies, your Musou gauge fills up, allowing you unleash a powerful special attack. You can pretty much guess what Wing’s special attack was: it’s beam rifle (or whatever they called it in the anime.)

The other Musou games had enemy heroes that you had to fight and Gundam Musou is no exception. The ones you have to face are the natural rivals of your allied heroes (and yourself) in the demo. The allied heroes being Master Asia (G,) Jerid (Z,) and yourself (Heero, W,) the rivals are Domon, Kamille, and Zechs. Of colurse, I have no idea why the heroes are allied with eachother in such away (the demo only explains that Jerid got his butt kicked by the player in the previous level and decides to join thm to get stronger or something.)

Even though a lot of the people at the forum I regularly go to (GAF) seem to love it, I can hardly stand it. It’s really just another mindless hack n slash, you versus a million game from Koei. I really don’t know how people keep eating these games up. That being said, they should have made Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Gundam instead :) (now how’s that for a title that doesn’t make sense?) We need more Gundam strategy games, anyway.
