This continues right where the other diary entry left off. You may notice that the amount of detail suffers after the first battle. I’m still exploring on how much I should talk about each move during battles. You may think the first battle is boring, so oh well… Hopefully you enjoy this.

2/1/190

Nan Pi sends out a force of 18,500 spears to counter the force of about 25,000 cavalry heading towards it. Sun Jian and the generals Sun Ce and Gao Sheng lead the counterattack force. Even though they are outnumbered, their equipment should provide them with the advantage they need to successfully counter the enemy force.

2/11/190

Sun Ce’s unit is the first to get attacked. Gongsun Yue’s 7,000 cavalry goes through the spearmen using the wedge formation, causing great damage to Sun Ce. Whilst Sun Ce loses 800 men, Gongsun Yue only receives 200 casaulties.

The next attack comes from Yan Gang. He charges Sun Ce’s unit, causing another 800 casualties. Gongsun Kang brings up the rear with his 5,000 men and attacks Sun Ce from a range.

Sun Ce uses the Assult tactic to cause damage both to Yan Gang and Gongsun Kang. He pushes back Yan Gang’s unit onto Gonsung Kang’s. Yan Gang loses a thousand while Gonsun Kang loses about 200. Sun Jian also uses this opportunity to attack Yan Gang. The combined efforts of both generals reduce Yan Gan’s total men to 5,000.

Seeing that Nan Pi might be in trouble, Ping Yuan sends a force of 5,000 crossbows, led by Wang Zhong, to assist Sun Jian. The are scheduled to arrive in 40 days.

2/21/190

The next ten days are even more damaging for Sun Ce. He is attacked again by Yan Gang and Gongsun Yue. His numbers are reduced to 1,500 men.

Sun Jian is attacked by the foolish Gongsun Kang, who recieves more casulties than he gives.

Gao Sheng does his first action in the war by using Thrust against Yan Gang’s unit and pushing them onto Gongsun Kang, causing great damage to Yan Gang. Meanwhile, Sun Jian decides to relieve Sun Ce’s unit by attacking Gongsun Yue, inflicting 1,000 casaulties.

3/1/190

Locusts arrive in Ping Yuan. It does not bode well for harvests. They will surely destroy most of the farms of the city.

Sun Ce’s unit is destroyed by the efforts of Yang Gang and Gongsun Yue, but due to the efforts of Sun Jian and Gao Sheng, the army of spears is no longer outnumbered. The spears number at about 11,000 while the enemy cavalry number at 9,000.

Sun Jian has run out of food to feed his troops. Even though he is close to Nan Pi, the city cannot offer its assitance for it has run out of food as well. The reinforcements from Xiao Pi are still about a two months’ journey away.

The lack of food has hurt Nan Pi very much. Its garrison has shrunk significantly to about 7,000 men (perhaps a lost of 10 or more thousand men.)

3/11/190

Sun Jian is able to overcome the foolish Gongsun Kang, whose force is destroyed in combat. After recieving attacks from all three enemy generals, the soveriegn still has 6,000 men left. After defeating Gongsun Kang, he steals the food which will provide him with 40 more days of combat.

The forces of Wang Zhong are a mere 10 days journey away. They will be able to provide excellent rear support for the 10,000 who still survive.

The reinforcements from Xiao Pi have just passed the locust-ridden Ping Yuan.

3/21/190

Due to the combined efforts of Sun Jian and Gao Sheng, Yang Guo’s unit is fully annihilated.

Wang Zhong’s unit finally joins the combat, firing incinery arrows at Gongsun Yue. Nan Pi’s situation looks quite a bit better. It is now 14,000 men armed against Gongsun Yue’s 1,300.

4/1/190

Gao Sheng challenges Gongsun Yue to a duel. Although he almost emerges victorious, he is overtaken by Gongsun Yue’s special attack and is defeated. He is then captured.

In the following ten days, Wang Zhong attacks Gongsun Yue’s troops and destroys them. A force of 6,000 enemy troops, armed with rams, arrive at Nan Pi. This force is easily thwarted by Sun Jian during the course of the month.

The reinforcements from Xia Pi arrive at Nan Pi, as well, bringing much needed food, gold, and troops.

Xiao Pei decides to send out more reinforcements towards Nan Pi. The route of its transport unit has it stop at Ben Hai in order to stock up on more food.

7/11/190

Nothing exciting happens during the fifth and sixth months of 190. Sun Jian hears about an attack on Ji by Ding Yuan. Ding Yuan sent out a force of 1,200 men, led by Zhang Yang’s unit, in order to overatake the city. Seeing a golden opportunity for expansion, Sun Jian sends out a force of 12,000 spears to attack Ji.

The reinforcements of Xiao Pei arrive in Ben Hai only to be sent out again towards Nan Pi. The supplies include 48,000 troops, 26,300 pieces of gold and 56,600 food.

8/21/190

Another large force from Bei Ping is sent out to march against Nan Pi. The sovereign has seemed to learn his lession from last time and has somewhat diversified his force. His force now includes 14,000 cavalry and 5,000 spearemen.

Upon hearing this, Sun Jian has decided to bring his own spearmen closer to Nan Pi, cancelling his attack on Ji. In hi stead, Han Dang with 8,000 cavalry march toward Ji. Sun Ce is sent out to battle again with 6,000 spears. Huang Gai, with 3,000 archers, build an archer turret on the only path toward Nan Pi.

11/1/190

The enemy force is subdued with very little fanfare. The reinforcements arrive in Nan Pi. Forces from Nan Pi are sent out to Ji and Bei Ping.

Two months later, Ji is captured. One of the enemy generals is employed; the rest are captured. All generals with the family name, including the enemy sovereign Gongsun Zan, are executed after they refused to join Sun Jian. Gongsun Yue is put in charge of Zan’s forces. Lu Bu joins Sun Jian’s force.

Of course, Ding Yuan was also aiming to take capture of Ji. Seeing Sun Jian’s opportunistic takeover of Ji as a hostile action, Ding Yuan decides to not only annul the alliance, but to also send a small attack force of 2,000 spears toward the city.

Attack on Bei Ping: 1/1/191 to 5/1/191

The first battles of the attack take place in a narrow passage that serves as a bottleneck to protect Bei Ping. Yue’s forces had built an arrow tower in the pass for further protection. If my troops were going to pass, they would need to destroy the tower. Sun Jian sees that Zan’s forces are weakening, so he sends out a large attack groups, consisting of tens of thousands of men, across the pass.

Yue sees this coming, however, and sends out his own men to defend the pass. The two forces would be stuck fighting on the pass until late in the second month of 191.

3/21/191

After destroying the arrow tower and defeating many generals in battle, Sun Jian’s forces march toward the city itself. At this time, victory is almost certain. All future battles in the area will no longer be fought in a narrow path, but instead will be fought in the open fields outside of the city.

Sun Ce’s unit of horsemen drives through and defeat Gongsun Yue’s cavalry. Remembering all of the trouble Yue has given Sun Jian during battles (see first battle mentioned,) Sun Ce decides to execute the enemy sovereign. Liu Yan, not even a relative to the Gonguns, is named the leader of the force.

It is fitting that he should be the last leader of the force. Many moons ago, he worked for Sun Jian, but the swined betrayed him and joined Gongsun Zan.

With the destruction of Gongsun Yue’s army, all resistance from Bei Ping is destroyed. All that is left to do is to take the city itself.

The 2,000 man army is raiding the fields near Ji. So far, no relief force has been sent out to stage a counterattack.

5/1/191

The 2,000 man army is soundly defeated by 7,000 spears led by Sun Jian and Lu Bu. There is hardly any contest.

Bei Ping is captured and Liu Yan is executed. Tian Kai is named as his successor. By this time, the force is hardly worth the effort of completely defeating. The whole military force of the enemy consists of a mere 20,000 men. Sun Jian decides to pursue a more diplomatic solution to the problem.

At the same time, Ding Yuan decides to send 5,000 cavalry from Jin Yang to Ji through a small, narrow, easily defendable pass. Sun Jian and Lu Bu jump at the chance for an easy victory.
