Recently, meaning today, I started reading a new manga series by the name To-love-ru. I stumbled across this series when reading a post on Hongfre. It just happened to be mentioned. Very little was said about it, but I decided to check it out due to curiosity. I’m really glad I did. It’s an enjoyable mix of romance, comedy, and ecchi.

Didn’t I tell you that this was ecchi? Don’t worry, this is as ecchi as this scene gets. No hentai in this manga.

To-love-ru, like many other shounen manga, stars a high school boy. His name is Rito; he’s a normal boy with a normal crush. His life holds little significance. This all changes, predictably, when he is taking a bath and sees a girl pop up from the water. This girl happens to be the daughter of the ruler of most of the universe, running away from home to avoid all of her suitors. In order to stay on Earth, she decides to get engaged to poor Rito, thus much comedy ensues.

The three cliched girls of the series, the imouto-chan, the girl from space, and the crush.

One thing I really like about this series is the character designs. I know it’s shallow, but one of the reasons I picked this title up was because of the designs of the female characters. As always, the male characters aren’t anything special, but is anyone ever surprised with that? The artwork is pretty standard for a shounen manga.

The comedy is pretty standard for this type of manga. If you’ve ever read Ichigo 100%, you pretty much know what to expect. Think, bath peeping scenes or accidental groping. That’s probably one of the bad points about this manga. Even though the it’s pretty funny, it’s also pretty predictable.

Despite it being a typical shounen manga, it’s still an enjoyable read. I’m not really sure why, but maybe it’s because I’m a fan of this type of manga so much that I can overlook some of the cliches. I’d recommend this to anyone who is a fan of ecchi manga and has nothing else better to read. KEFI does the scanlations for this series. You can get them at their website.
