As part of my latest shipment of manga, I got thee last volume of Galaxy Angel Beta. It ends the storyline that begun in the first volume of its predecessor. Now that they have returned Prince Shiva to the White Moon, they are now focused on getting rid of the threat that Prince Etruria poses to the Moon Goddess. Even though I enjoyed the volume, I always feel as though something is missing when I read Galaxy Angel.
I like Kanon’s style in his character designs. The colors he uses in his colored illustrations are pretty simple, but his black and white pictures are pretty detailed. Many manga artists draw simple eyes for their characters, but his eyes are often drawn with a pretty good shading technique. His character designs are pretty good, as well, although I not sure if he was the original designer for the games.
One thing I don’t like about the Galaxy Angel manga series is its poor depiction of action scenes. They all seem fairly rushed and undetailed. Sometimes it feels hard to follow what exactly in going on during the battles that the Angels have. This is odd since in the games, at least, for the demo I played for the second game, the battles seemed strategy based. Since the manga is based on the games, I would have liked to see more detailed strategy in the manga, or at least have a sense that the Angels are actually thinking as they fly around.
The action sequences are were my biggest problem for the manga. The story is pretty nice, which is basically why I prefer the manga to the animated version. The ending was kind of unsatisfying. I felt as if the author took a cheap way out for Chitose’s story and the way the main bad guys were defeated seemed way too easy. I like my final battles to be hard and intense.
I would post some scans, but my laptop is out of service at the moment (a bad display problem, the backlight is out.) Look forward to them sometime after Thanksgivings Holiday.
